TREE: A VR EXPERIENCE

TREE: A Virtual Reality Experience

In this transformative virtual reality experience, viewers grow from a seedling into a mighty Kapok tree in the rainforest where deforestation looms. Produced with support from the Rainforest Alliance, Intel, HP, Technicolor and Vive, TREE features wind, fire, scent and haptic feedback to enhance the viewer’s total immersion in the experience. The project is a feat of technical innovation and visual storytelling – delivering a powerful call to action that inspires viewers to protect rainforests.

For this project, I collaborated with directors Milica Zec & Winslow Porter, Here Be Dragons, Droga5, Rainforest Alliance, Sundance Institute, The Redford Center, Chicken & Egg Pictures, HP, Konvrge and Milk VFX to prepare TREE for its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Tree is a virtual experience that transforms you into a rainforest tree, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2017 New Frontier. With your arms as branches and body as the trunk, you experience the tree’s growth from a seedling into its fullest form and witness its fate firsthand. Director: Milica Zec and Winslow Porter Art Director: Jakob Kudsk Steensen Composer: Aleksandar Protic Haptics: Xin Liu and Yedan Qian (MIT Media Lab) VR Line Producer: Jen Vitale With precisely controlled physical elements including vibration, heat, fan, and body haptics, the team created a fully immersive virtual reality storytelling tool, where the audience no longer watches but is transformed into a new identity, a giant tree in the Peruvian rainforest. Collaborating with The Rainforest Alliance, Tree gives each audience a numbered tree seed after the experience and connect them with the community. The team utilizes virtual, mixed and actual reality to tap into positive social change and explore the human experience.
